Poker Black Friday Update

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan, US, may have gone all out in a battle against the most visited and utilised  online poker organizations, however both the feds and the companies are doing their best to return the US players their funds.

A recent ‘Black Friday’ development resulted in an agreement between the two parties whereby the government will permit Pokerstars and Full Tilt to utilized their poker sites and money transfer technology in order to make withdrawals by US players permissible.

In addition, the agreements that have been drafted will also allow the companies to keep on using their main domain names offering real money games to international players outside the US.  As a compliance regulation, the sites agreed not to facilitate real money play for US players and this procedure will be monitored by an independent body to make sure the agreement is respected.

Black Friday NewsIn what many have nicknamed ‘Black Friday’, the 15th April saw Preet Bharara, the US attorney in Manhattan bring the online Poker industry to a halt by taking over 5 domain names which included 3 of the main companies which accepted US players for real money online poker games.  Together with the seizure of the domains, a federal judge also froze 76 bank accounts distributed around 14 countries.  Theses accounts were being utilized by the poker sites to manage their payments.  11 individuals were also charged with operating illegal gambling businesses, bank fraud, and money laundering.

Bharara stated that “No individual player accounts were ever frozen or restrained, and each implicated poker company has at all times been free to reimburse any player’s deposited funds” .  He continued by disclosing that. “This office expects the companies to return the money that U.S. players entrusted to them, and we will work with the poker companies to facilitate the return of funds to players.”

This agreement is a favourable turn of events in the eyes of the poker players who were thinking that they would never be able to withdraw their money or that it was going to take a very long time to do so.  As the domains are still under seizure by the government lawyers, the companies are required to place banners for their US customers once they are operational once again.  It will also allow for instructions on the site on how players may retrieve their funds.
